Now that your child has settled into our school routine, we will be sending home reading books. This is always a very exciting time for children and parents. 'First books' do not have any words so your child is free to use the pictures to help them tell the story. This is a great introduction to storytelling. As your child learns the letter sounds through daily phonics lessons, the books they bring home will begin to include simple words that are phonetically decodable (your child will be able to sound them out and blend them e.g. d-o-g / dog) or high frequency / sight words.
We ask that children aim to read at least 3 times during the week and that an adult signs their planner. Your child's progress will be celebrated on our Reception reading display.
If you have any further questions regarding reading with your child, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Reception team.
When are reading books changed?
Mondays - Red group
Tuesdays - Yellow group
Wednesdays - Green group
Thursdays - Blue group
Reception staff aim to read with each group once a week as well as practising phonic sounds and tricky words.
